BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – You can’t win them all, but if you don’t give up, eventually you win a few of them.
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats broke their three-game losing streak on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
For the fourth straight game, New Hampshire took a run in the first, this time with Chad Spanberger’s single bringing home Joshua Palacios.
New Hampshire couldn’t add any more runs in the first, but eventually built their lead with Kevin Smith’s second homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth that gave the team only its fifth home run of the year so far.
The ‘Cats grew their lead even more with a pair of RBI doubles from Palacios and Santiago Espinal in the fifth, bringing home another two runs and chasing Binghamton hurler Anthony Kay.
Only a ninth inning run marred what was an exceptional performance from New Hampshire’s pitching, which scattering nine hits on the night.
Hector Perez (1-1) gave up four of those hits in five innings of work, walking four and striking out seven on the way to the win.
Kay (0-1) was the loser, allowing five hits and all of New Hampshire’s runs in 4 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out four.
Kirby Snead gained his third save of the year in the victory.
The series concludes tomorrow night in Binghamton. Zach Logue of the Fisher Cats (0-0, 1.69 ERA) will go up against Binghamton southpaw David Peterson (0-0, 2.70 ERA).
