MANCHESTER, NH – Six teams, lots of clay and a series of challenges to see which team has the skill and strategy to win this year’s title of Clay Challenge Champions on May 9 at Studio 550 in Manchester.
Students from three New Hampshire high schools will compete for the title of “Clay Champions” based on a series of feats with potter’s clay, such as centering without using your hands, throwing the tallest or smallest pot in a set time or with a set amount of clay, and other such challenges. Some events will be individual competitions, but most will be team challenges. The teams will need both skill and strategy to win. The event runs from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Participating schools are Manchester’s Central High School, with traveling teams from Goffstown and ConVal in Peterborough. Each school is sending two teams composed of 3-5 students each.
“The idea of a Clay Challenge really fits the mission behind Studio 550, ‘Build a dynamic arts-centered community by enriching lives with unique art experiences and giving people an excuse to play.’ The Clay Challenge is a community building event that is all about playing. We’re looking forward to see how this event grows in the future.” says event organizer, Monica Leap, of Studio 550.
The judges for the event are potters Paul Haigh and Lori Rollason. Both are active members of the NH Potter’s Guild.
Community members are invited to visit and view the event, but viewing space is limited.
