MANCHESTER, NH – On April 18, the International Institute of New England (IINE) celebrated the opening of its new education center and offices on the corner of Bridge and Pine streets. Its downtown Manchester location is convenient for the immigrants and refugees it serves. It provides education in English and job search skills to adults, and services including resettlement aid and translation services.
Jeffrey Thielman, President and CEO, greeted the many immigrant adults and children who thronged the halls and classrooms, along with Mayor Joyce Craig and state Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut.
“With the charter school and preschool upstairs, and now the IINE in the lower level, it’s nice to see this building filled with people being educated,” Thielman said.
“As a former principal at Beech Street Elementary School, the International Institute provided wonderful partners who helped families assimilate into our community and into our school. Having the Institute centrally located will help serve more of the clients,” said Christine Brennan, Deputy Commissioner of Education.
The Manchester Institute was formerly located on Elm Street in the North End. It was founded in Lowell in 1919 and Boston in 1924. The International Institute of New Hampshire was founded in 1994. In 2001 the three sites became one consolidated organization – The International Institute of New England.
