It’s time to vote!  Are you ready?

O P I N I O N

THE SOAPBOX

Stand up. Speak up. It’s your turn.

By this time, it’s enough. It’s tiring.  All the knocking on our doors, the literature left on our steps.  But voting is a right that supports our democratic union.  And I get it…. it takes time to sift through all the words and try to determine who aligns with what we think is important, where we want to see our schools, our neighborhoods, our city streets in 2 years; in 5 years.

So, I’m writing to ask every person who is going to vote in Manchester on Tuesday November 4th to make sure and get to know the facts and ask the serious questions that maybe a political note card can’t answer.

Does your school committee candidate send (or sent) their children to public schools? To Manchester public schools?

Has your alderman (of many years) running for re-election ever called a Town Hall meeting to ask you – their constituents – what’s important to you?

Is an aldermanic candidate a registered lobbyist?  Are they funded by special interest groups that expect favorable voting in the future?

Has the candidate been active in the community? What specifically have they done in the last two years to make Manchester a better place? Can they be reached and react when you call or email them?

Once again, it’s up to every voter to know who it is they are casting their vote for.  And that may take a little time.  A little sleuthing.  A clue – check out who pays for those mailers you keep getting.

In the end you can color that circle knowing that your choice was made with a clear picture of who they are……And most of all. –  VOTE!

Ann Williams lives in Manchester and has been voting here for 25 years.
