You may remember reading about a cream-and-white cat fished from the Spicket River in Lawrence, Mass., the day after the “the blizzard of 2015” back in January.
Juno, the cat (so called after the winter storm’s unofficial name) has been camped out since Jan. 29 at the Nevins Farm in Methuen, Mass., according to Rob Halpin, public relations director for the MSPCA.
Meanwhile, she’s been spayed and vaccinated and pronounced good to go. All Juno needs now is a home, he said.
“We’re just unsure what kind of home that will be,” said Mike Keiley, director at the Nevins. “She’ll likely always be a bit shy, perhaps a little fearful, but with lots of patience and the safety and predictability of a home, we’re confident she’ll make an excellent pet.”
The farm took her in right after Lawrence, Mass. firefighters rescued her from ice, where Jun0 had become trapped at the river’s edge.
Although Juno came out of the river almost frozen and pretty scared, she bounced back fast – so fast her handlers initially guessed she might be a feral cat.
Over the past weeks, staff evaluated her health and “cattitude,” Halpin indicated. Although Juno started out wild as her namesake – and seemed headed for a barn cat’s life – she’s since relaxed.
“Now that she’s been with us for a few weeks she has settled into a routine and has become much friendlier,” Keiley said. “We’re still unsure if Juno ever had a permanent home because she wasn’t spayed.”
But efforts to locate Juno’s family have proved unsuccessful.
“It’s been nearly two months,” Halpin said. “No one has stepped forward to claim ownership of Juno, reinforcing the belief that she may have been a stray.” She will leave with a microchip implant, Halpin said, so she never goes missing again.
