CONCORD, NH – On Thursday, New Hampshire State Representative Matthew Coker (R-Meredith) announced he officially switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican through a GOP press release.
Majority Leader Jason Osborne (R-Auburn) issued a statement expressing his appreciation and excitement for Representative Coker’s decision.
“Today, I am thrilled to welcome State Representative Matt Coker to the Republican Caucus. Representative Coker’s decision to join our ranks speaks volumes about his dedication to serving the people of New Hampshire with integrity and conviction,” said Osborne. “His commitment to his principles and tireless advocacy for the values that matter most to his Meredith constituents makes him an invaluable addition to our team.”
Coker released the following statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“After extensive reflection and deliberation I’ve made the decision to change my party affiliation from democrat to republican to better align my party with my core values. As I reflect on the first half of my term it is abundantly clear to me my proper place in this body is on the center right side of the aisle. I’m excited to join my new caucus and continue working to deliver for my community.”
Coker is in his first term serving along with Republican Lisa Smart from the Belknap 2 district, which consists of Meredith and Gilford. Coker earned 1,581 votes in November 2022, behind Smart (1,649) but ahead of Democrat Sandra Mucci (1,546) and Cindy Creteau-Miller (1,445).
He is the fourth state representative to change affiliations this term. The previous three became independents, with Shaun Filiault of Keene and Maria Perez of Milford leaving the Democratic Party and Dan Hynes of Bedford leaving the Republican Party.
The switch gives the House 201 Republicans, 194 Democrats, three Independents and two vacant seats.
