MANCHESTER, NH – The Missing People Project is an exhibition by artist Savanna Sullivan at the ARGH Gallery, 416 Chestnut St., featuring portraits of individuals isolated in time, outside the context of imagined trauma. The process of layering materials and repeatedly erasing with destructive solvent, imitates the individual’s condition of existing in limbo.
Sullivan is a New Hampshire painter who received her education at Maine College of Art in Portland, ME. Her work is mainly conceptual and portrait or figure-based. She focuses on research and the art-making process as a way to look at identity through myths and trauma.
Artist Statement:
“In an on-going project, I discover the tension between life and death, time, and erasure with these appropriated images of missing people. The sea of faces exist in limbo and overwhelm the space they fill, challenging visual hierarchy. Less about memorial, they represent a personal metaphor for the use of fear to control.”
The show opens Jan. 24 from 5-7:30 p.m.
