Peak viewing for The Orionids

The Orionids meteor shower will reach its peak tonight, offering a chance to see up to 20 meteors per hour. The weather is set to improve, starting with considerable clouds early on, gradually clearing later. The night sky will showcase one of autumnโ€™s finest meteor showers as the Orionids hit their annual peak at the beginning of the new week. The meteor display will increase tonight, peaking in the early morning hours of Tuesday, with up to 20 meteors per hour visible in the sky. Activity typically peaks between 2 AM and daybreak, when Earth faces directly into the stream of debris responsible for the shower.

Meteor showers happen when Earth travels through trails of debris left by comets or asteroids. The Orionids, for example, are caused by cosmic dust from Halley’s Comet, which is also responsible for the Eta Aquarid meteor shower every May.
