It’s December 8, 2019. Here’s a recap of some of what’s been going on lately in Saint Anselm sports.
Women’s Volleyball
The season came to an end on Friday, with the Hawks falling to Molloy in five sets in the NCAA Division II Tournament East Region Semifinals
Both teams alternated set wins, with Molloy’s 5-2 opening advantage in the final set too much for the Hawks to overcome.
Senior Catie McCarthy (Warrenton, Va.) ended her career by adding to her school record in kills, pushing her final tally to 1,164 with an additional 13. She also finished with a tie for the school’s all-time record for kills in a season with 385, a mark also set by Marissa Caron ’04 in 2003.
Junior Elise Jolly (Merrimack, N.H.) led the Hawks with 21 kills, a new personal best. Freshman Caroline Belmontez (San Diego, Cali.) had a career-high 33 digs.
Friday also marked the final game for senior Madison Sollows (Barnstable, Mass.), who finishes her career as the school’s leader in attack percentage (.325)
The Hawks season comes to a close with a final record of 21-11. Saint Anselm has made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the first three in program history. Friday’s quarterfinal win over the University of New Haven marked the first NCAA tournament victory for the program.
Men’s Ice Hockey
The Hawks split the weekend with a 5-3 win over Assumption on Friday and a 5-3 loss to Franklin Pierce on Saturday.
On Friday, the Hawks went into the first intermission with the lead thanks to goals from senior Trey Aiello (Williamsburg, Va.) and freshman Andrew Andary (Macomb, Mich.). Senior Liam O’Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) and sophomore Killian Hammersmith (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) added goals in the second period and senior Mike Ferraro (Northbridge, Mass.) added an empty net goal with nine seconds left to go along with his two assists.
On Saturday, the Hawks entered the first intermission with another 2-1 lead thanks to goals from junior Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Anthony Iacullo (Barrington, Ill.), but couldn’t keep up with the Franklin Pierce offense.
Saint Anselm’s other goal on Saturday came from senior Sean Verrier (Reading, Mass.)
The Hawks fall to 7-5-1 on the year while dropping to 4-2-1 in NE10 competition. The Ravens improve to 8-2-1 on the year and 3-1-0 in conference play. The Hawks will look ahead to 2020 for their next competition as they host Bowdoin on Friday, Jan. 3 at 4 p.m.
Women’s Ice Hockey
On the women’s side, the Hawks also had a split weekend, defeating Wesleyan (Conn.) 5-2 on Friday and falling 3-2 against Manhattanville College on Saturday in a pair of non-conference games.
Sophomore Kelly Golini (Tewksbury, Mass.) had Saint Anselm’s two even-strength goals in the Friday win, with the Hawks getting power play goals from sophomore Amanda Nylander (Hanover, Minn.) and junior Katy Meehan (Quincy, Mass.) and a shorthanded goal from junior Jayden Young (Norwood, N.Y.)
Meehan scored another goal in the Saturday loss, with junior Gabby Monaco (La Verne, Calif.) had Saint Anselm’s other goal.
