Saint Anselm College has announced the creation of “The Aaron Tolson Institute of Dance at Saint Anselm College.” The new Institute will begin its work in December and serve as an avenue for the development of young dancers by offering opportunities such as dance intensives, workshops, and student performances with seasoned and prominent dance instructors.

Art started becoming more important to me when I began to use it as a way to combat my mental illnesses and disabilities. I was deemed permanently disabled after a pretty bad accident at the end of July, and all it took was for one woman forgetting to look both ways as she blew through a stop sign over the speed limit to take away a lot of my freedom.

Way before alternative rock was even a thing and heavy metal was still relatively new, there was a band laying down the foundation for the former while putting a creative spin on the latter. They go by the name of King’s X and the trio of vocalist and bassist Doug Pinnick, guitarist Ty Tabor and drummer Jerry Gaskill can definitely bring the emphasis and the amplification.

Cue Zero Theatre Company presents the dark and fascinating musical “Assassins” at the Derry Opera House October 27-29. Artistic Director Dan Pelletier cites this show as “one of the most powerful and intriguing pieces ever. It combines some of Stephen Sondheim’s best work with incredible true crime tales.”  “Assassins” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

As part of their tour in support of the new full-length, Xiu Xiu are going to be performing at Nova Arts in Keene on October 26. I had a talk with Stewart ahead of the show about the creation process behind the album, having a couple other bands do some remixes of their music, the current lineup of the band and always feeling grateful when it comes to being able to play a show.

The exchange between the Käthe-Kollwitz Gymnasium in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany and the High Schools in Manchester, New Hampshire was established in 1990 and is supposed to let the participants experience “world culture.” This year our group of 16 German students arrived on September 30 in Manchester and I will give you some insight of our experiences in the U.S. and the activities we did so far.

Getting to be outside so often was a well-needed breath of fresh air. I got to really tap into my painting abilities when I was given a decent-sized surface to put my piece on. Now, to the viewer, these are just completed paintings, but to the artists, these are visual timelines from beginning to end of the internship. So many memories, adventures, conversations, and learning opportunities crammed into one month, partnered with new, restored, and strengthened bonds.
