And that’s also why when my good buddy, Nate Graziano, (Graz!), handed me his newest collection of poems, “Born On Good Friday,” the cover alone made me feel the tickles of a panic attack. Graz as a kid standing at a tilt in a new blue suit with the price tag still on it. The new shoes soon-to-be play boots, the awkward smile, the crooked bow tie.  Fall in Rhode Island. Barren and cold.  Someone, please, knife me now.

This can be said about Jonathan Scales, who has been expanding the limit of the steel pan instrument in a variety of ways for over 15 years. He exhibits his craft with his band known as the Fourchestra, and they’re going to be taking the stage at The Stone Church in Newmarket on August 12. Starting at 8 p.m., Scales and his band will bring sounds that are both cohesive and expansive while exuding a peculiar quality.

There are times, and we all have had them, when our normal routine is interrupted by a surprising interaction with another person. I am not talking about a conversation with someone new at a party or a business meeting. Those situations are to be expected and assumed. I am describing an event that seems to have been planned in advance without our knowledge or consent. One where we have been placed just where needed and at just the correct time. An event that will remain and continue to give us pause.
