In honor of the new year, I was going to lay out some things that are done in other cities that may work here, (adapting ideas is a good thing in my opinion). But in light of the recent deaths of two homeless people, I switched gears and am going to write about an issue that is unfortunately as common in Manchester as the day is long.

Every time something happens like it has been here in the past week, it’s unbelievably heartbreaking for those of us working on this issue. Despite explanations from two different state police departments and two neighboring city government officials, it’s still hard to fathom why a homeless woman from Maine was driven 60 miles south by Sanford Police to a homeless shelter in Manchester, where there was no bed waiting for her.

Each year, Manchester Firefighters partner with a national non-profit called Operation Warm to give out brand-new winter coats to kids within the community. Money for the effort is raised throughout the year by way of public and private donations. Coats are purchased in bulk through Operation Warm and distributed to children at public schools around Manchester.
