State offers Food Stamp replacement benefits due to storm

Food StampsCONCORD, NH — Theย  Newย  Hampshireย  Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS)ย  Divisionย  ofย  Family Assistance (DFA) announced today that the USDA
Food and Nutrition Serviceย  (FNS) will replace Food Stamp benefits to
recipientsย  affected by the recent widespread power outages. Many lost food
because of spoilage due to the power outages caused by the winter storm.

“Individuals who were participatingย inย  the Foodย  Stampย  Program on November 26, 2014, may request replacementย foodย  stampsย  no later than December 10.ย  We are requesting that the USDAย FNSย  extendย  thatย  deadline,ย  butย  this federal permission has not yet beenย received,” saidย DFA Director Terry Smith.

Fundingย  for food stamp benefits is 100 percent federal.ย  New Hampshire Food Stamp
policyย  isย  directedย  by federal regulation, including replacement benefitsย for food lost as a result of circumstances such as the power outage.

Toย  receiveย  replacementย  foodย  stampย  benefits,ย  recipients must provide a
signedย  statementย  indicating a food loss was due to a power outage related
to the storm.ย  The statement must include the total value of the lost food.
