Tale of two pets: A happy ending for Dale the cat, and hope for a home for Carol the French bulldog pup

โ€œPardon me,โ€ Asia, the immortal tabby, cleared his throat and stamped his right-front paw on little sister Nickelโ€™s shoulder.

โ€œOh-oh,โ€ the orange-and-white girl whispered. Whenever her big brother excused himself he didnโ€™t really mean to apologize. He intended to complain โ€” about something.

โ€œWhere are the press releases?โ€ he demanded. โ€œGabbyโ€™s supposed to write her next column about Dale, the tuxedo cat, and Carol, the French Bulldog puppy. I donโ€™t see the press package anyplace.โ€

โ€œWe put them in the new pigeon-holes,โ€ Twila saidย

โ€œPigeon-holes?โ€ Asia fumed. โ€œPigeon-holes?โ€

โ€œWe switched over to pigeon-holes because the files kept falling over. Plus, we like anything about pigeons.โ€

โ€œLong story short,โ€ Nickel explained. โ€œI stuffed Daleโ€™s story in the โ€˜Happy Endingsโ€™ cubby. And I put Carolโ€™s information in โ€˜Suspense.โ€™ Gabby needed a new system, so I adapted the one Herbert Coleridge and James Murray used for the Oxford English Dictionary,โ€ Nickel said, adjusting her Cat Eyeglasses before they slipped down her nose. โ€œOK, I didnโ€™t really adapt it. Charlie, the black cat, built it for me.โ€

โ€œOh my paw,โ€ Asia said. โ€œDoes Gabby know?โ€

โ€œI know, and Iโ€™m keeping an open mind,โ€ Gabby said. โ€œIโ€™ll start with Daleโ€™s story.โ€

โ€œIs that to keep us in suspense?โ€ Asia said.

โ€œYes,โ€ Gabby said. โ€œAnd because Daleโ€™s story hits home.โ€

โ€œDale was supposed to stay in the house,โ€ the Peke-a-Poo diva began, staring at Twila who famously went missing for two days after she waltzed out the front door. โ€œAnd no one knows why she thought that would be a good idea,โ€ Gabby muttered. โ€œBut at least, she went out in warm weather. Dale snuck outside on Oct. 20, when the East Boston temperatures were dropping like rose petals. To keep warm, he crawled under a car hood.ย

โ€œThat turned out to be a bad idea. He touched the carโ€™s hot engine and wound up with burns. According to Rob Halpin, spokesman for MSPCA-Angell, people heard howls coming from a parked car on Monmouth Street in East Boston. Inside the engine block, Boston Animal Control found Dale.ย ย

No one recognized him from the neighborhood. Police couldnโ€™t find a collar or a microchip on him, so rescuers brought him to the MSPCAโ€™s Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center. After a few days observation, the veterinarians realized the 10-pound kittyโ€™s medical battle had just started.

While the doctors worked on the wound five weeks, the staff focused on finding his guardians. Victoria Odynsky, manager of the MSPCAโ€™s Boston adoption center, felt sure somebody must be missing him.ย ย

โ€œHeโ€™s really friendly and social so we know he once had a home โ€” and weโ€™re hoping that by drawing attention to his plight, an owner may step forward to claim him,โ€ she said.ย

Dale would need several surgeries to make him good as new but did make it home for Christmas, Halpin said.ย

โ€œTurns out he is a bit of an escape artist.โ€ He wonโ€™t sneak out again,ย the family says. โ€œThey are keeping him under lock and key. They were so grateful to find him again.โ€

โ€œMew,โ€ Twila said.ย

โ€œHappy ending,โ€ Charlie said. โ€œNow how about some suspense?โ€

Gabby sighed.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how Carolโ€™s story will end,โ€ Gabby said. โ€œI hope happily, but hereโ€™s all I can say so far โ€”

โ€œWait,โ€ Asia said. โ€œWhoโ€™s Carol?โ€

โ€œCarol is a French Bulldog,โ€ Gabby said. โ€œLike Gatsby Perkins and Judge.โ€

โ€œSorry,โ€ Asia said. โ€œI didnโ€™t have a chance to read the notes because Nickel hid them in the PIGEON-HOLES.ย

โ€œMay I continue?โ€ Gabby said. โ€œCarol also needed emergency surgery in Boston. She went into the operating room on Christmas Eve, and if she pulls through, MSPCA-Angell will look for a new family to adopt her. Sheโ€™s only 11-weeks old.

โ€œShe needs the operation because she broke her left elbow, the front one, according to Halpin, and doctors planned to implant a steel device to hold the bones together while she heals. The doctors think she hurt herself playing.

โ€œPlaying?โ€ Charlie said.

โ€œShe plays hard,โ€ Gabby confirmed. โ€œYou can check out her moves in the video below. And please donโ€™t fall in love and start begging mum to adopt her. Full house here already.โ€

โ€œHe likes a rough girl,โ€ Asia said. โ€œCharlie.โ€

โ€œWell, heโ€™s got me,โ€ Gabby snapped. โ€œSorry. I didnโ€™t mean to be unpleasant, but Iโ€™m coming to the sad part. Carolโ€™s family couldnโ€™t deal with the surgery and the upcoming several months of recovery. She will be adopted out sometime in January, according to Halpin, if all goes well โ€” meaning sheโ€™s not going to be in pain.

โ€œAfter her surgery, Carol will require strict exercise restriction for several months โ€” and a re-check and X-rays in eight weeks to ensure her bones are indeed healing,โ€ Halpin said.ย

โ€œAnd for anyone โ€” except Charlie, Asia, Nickel and Twila โ€” eager to adopt Carol, contact adoption@mspca.orgย for more information.

โ€œCarolโ€™s surgery and after-care are expected to top $5,000,โ€ Halpin said, โ€œand the MSPCA is soliciting donations to offset the cost of the operation.ย  Anyone interested in donating can do so by clickingย here.
