The Soapbox: Open letter to the NH House of Representatives on CACR 15

O P I N I O N

THE SOAPBOX

Stand up. Speak up. It’s your turn.

To the NH Legislature:

Please oppose CACR 15, the resolution that would place hunting, fishing, and harvesting game into the New Hampshire Constitution as a constitutional right. It will be heard in Rep’s Hall on Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Hunting and fishing are already well-regulated and supported in our state. The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department manages wildlife and oversees these activities to ensure they continue responsibly.

Elevating one recreational activity above others, such as wildlife watching, hiking, skiing, or snowmobiling, is unnecessary. There is no evidence that hunting and fishing are in danger of disappearing in New Hampshire.

New Hampshire’s Constitution should be reserved for fundamental rights and the structure of government, not for elevating one recreational activity above others.

CACR 15 appears to be a solution in search of a problem and an unnecessary use of the Legislature’s time.

Linda Dionne is President at NH Animal Rights League.
