TRENTON, N.J. – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats began their three-game set along the banks of the Delaware River on a sour note, falling 6-1 to the Trenton Thunder on Monday.
All seven combined runs came by the end of the third, with New Hampshire’s coming courtesy of a Brady Koerner wild pitch that allowed Vinny Capra to scamper across the plate in the top of the third.
Half an inning later, Trenton found four more runs in addition to the two they grabbed in the first, chasing New Hampshire starter Hector Perez.
Perez (1-2) was on the hook for all six runs despite leaving with one out to go in the third, giving up six hits and six walks in the process.
The win went to Daniel Alvarez (4-0), as he struck out four of the six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth.
New Hampshire’s pitching staff limited Trenton to just three hits after the departure of Perez, but the Cats’ bats could not capitalize, ending the day going 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Forest Wall and Kevin Smith each finished with two hits apiece, with Wall also notching a pair of walks.
Tuesday night holds another showdown in New Jersey’s capital as lefty Zach Logue (2-0, 3.27 ERA) takes the mound for New Hampshire against Trenton’s Albert Abreu (0-2, 7.31 ERA).
