Trinity boys basketball team continues 2026 surge

MANCHESTER, NH โ€“ With a 67-50 victory over visiting Merrimack Friday night, the Trinity High School varsity boys basketball team extended its current winning streak to five games.

In fact, the Pioneers, now 6-2 nearing the midpoint of the season, have yet to lose a game in 2026 and appear to be picking up steam heading into what appears to be a challenging stretch of games.

One of the significant reasons for Trinity’s recent success is the emergence of junior guard Jordan Torres, who led the Pioneers in scorings with 26 points in Friday’s win over Merrimack, a week after he scored 23 points to help dispatch Nashua South.

Though the Pioneers fell behind early against Merrimack, trailing 8-2 in the opening minutes, they had righted the ship by the end of the first quarter, taking a 15-14 advantage into the second frame and extending that lead to 39-19 by halftime, including 19 first-half points from Torres.

In addition to 11 points from Jamar Gregory-Alleyne, Kevin Doherty also came up big for the Pioneers Friday with 14 points, including back-to-back three-pointers from the corner in the second quarter that helped set the tone for the rest of game.

Having taken a double-digit lead heading into the locker room, the Pioneers cruised through the second half en route to the 17-point triumph.

Though his team’s play the late has been encouraging, Trinity head coach Ray Farmer said attention to detail, discipline and on-court communication will determine Trinity’s ability to compete for a state crown.

“I hate guys celebrate making shots. That’s not my go-to thing. When we make a shot, we have to be focused on getting right into defense and right into what we’re doing, you know what I mean? Because we switch defenses so much, and we’re constantly changing things up, that we all need to be on the same page. If we’re celebrating wins on shots and layups, which we should be making, then we should be getting back in defense, which we’re not doing. So that’s one thing we need to really focus on,” he said. “And I feel like when we do that and we’re focusing on that, we see that the turnovers just accumulate so quickly. So that’s what I want to get better at.

“And then talking,” added Farmer. “I don’t know if it’s a generational thing that’s gone away or what, but I swear, I don’t know why kids don’t talk on defense. But if we decide to do that, when we do it, we’ll be unstoppable. So those two things we are focusing on.”

Trinity now prepares for a significant home test against 5-3 Exeter at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before welcoming 2-6 Nashua North to the Queen City for a Jan. 23 home contest, also at 6:30.

The Pioneers then have a significant road test at 6-2 Pinkerton on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 5:15 p.m. and then close the month with a home clash against 5-2 Alvine on Friday, the 30th at 6:30 p.m.
