Wake-up call: Technology is a game changer for how we live

Innovation pic

forward focus logoI listen to talk radio โ€ฆ yes, talk radio. Most of the information that I get is either from talkย radio, Twitter, Fox News, Manchester Ink Link, Boston.com, GoLocal Providence, and anyย other source that can be accessed โ€“ and easily browsed and read โ€“ via Smart Phone orย Tablet. I guess itโ€™s only natural that technological platforms such as these provideย discussions and information about new and innovative products.

While driving in Manchester a couple weeks ago, I heard about some products that helpย keep us safe and wake us. The first product is a hands-free, voice-command accessory thatย is now standard on some automobiles. (I know a few people who have steering wheel-controlled accessories such as radios, but the product Iโ€™m speaking of is operated totally byย voice command).

Blue Tooth drivingThe product that was discussed is Android Auto, which is a voice-activated option availableย on select models of vehicles, including those manufactured by Audi, Buick, Chevrolet, Ford,ย GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi. In short, Android Auto allows the user to useย their Android Smart Phone, (version Lollipop or higher), to broadcast onto the vehicleโ€™sย touchscreen once it is plugged into the USB port. This allows the vehicle to respond to voiceย commands given by the driver via their headset. (Some manufacturers configure theirย vehicles to allow operation without a headset). This allows the driver to keep their eyes onย the road while still being able to control many of the vehicles features.

If oneโ€™s vehicle does not have a voice-activated accessory system, they could still utilizeย voice-command technology via their phone. Most phones are equipped with either Blueย Tooth technology, which allows a user to access features on their device via voiceย command, (hands-free), or a jack that allows the user to connect headphones with a two-way microphone thus allowing commands with the push of a button, (not totally hands-freeย but single-button).

Officials are hoping that having more hands-free options will reduce injuries and deathsย associated with distracted driving. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, inย 2013 there were 3,154 people killed and an estimated 424,000 injured in motor vehicleย crashes involving distracted drivers, which is 10 percent of fatal crashes, (18% of injury crashesย and 16 percent of all police-reported crashes).

Wake clock litAnother product that was discussed โ€“ and has nothing to do with automobile safety but canย get someone out of bed without disturbing their sleeping partner, is called Wakฤ“. This alarmย clock, created by Lucera Labs, wakes a person by intelligently finding their location in theย bed and rotating into position so that it can direct a tight burst of light and sound at theirย face, waking them but not their sleeping partner. Wakฤ“ does this by using a set ofย parametric speakers capable of focusing sound into a narrow beam. (Think of it as aย spotlight for noise). If Wakฤ“ is pointed straight at the userโ€™s head theyโ€™ll hear it loud andย clear, but if one is outside of the beamโ€™s small radius, the sound will be extremely faint.

The Wakฤ“ clock is one of the coolest innovations that I have heard of recently and isย definitely something on my โ€œto purchaseโ€ list. Right now, Wakฤ“ is in the Kickstarter stage,ย and as of March 8th production began. There is also a Wakฤ“ app for Smart Phones that worksย like a regular alarm but has some features of the wall mounted clock.
