Lyrids 2026: Your guide to catching the first meteor shower since January

Image/EarthSky.org

The first meteor shower in over three months is about to reach its peak, and this yearโ€™s viewing conditions are almost perfect thanks to the moon. The Lyrid meteor shower in April is the first major event since the Quadrantids peaked in early January. While sporadic meteors, including several fireballs over North America, have lit up the sky in the meantime, none have been linked to a significant shower. The peak night is Tuesday, April 21, continuing into the early morning of Wednesday, April 22, with as many as 15 to 20 meteors per hour visible. Clouds could be a problem for us. The moon phase favors this year’s Lyrids, as the peak of the shower coincided with a crescent moon, meaning there will be minimal natural light interference. The best viewing times will be during the second half of the night when the showerโ€™s radiant point appears high in the sky.
