Windham boys roll over ice-cold Central, 73-40

WINDHAM, NH — “If you can’t make shots, you’re not going to win a basketball game.”

With that one statement, Central High boys basketball Coach Sudi Lett summed up a frustrating and disappointing 73-40 loss, Friday night at Windham High.

Central began the game ice-cold from the field and never warmed up, having just as much time making shots from the perimeter as in the paint. The Little Green made just two shots from the field in the first quarter and just 14 for the game, including only three from beyond the arc.

It wasn’t any easier from the free throw line, where Central was 9 of 15 for the game but just 4 of 15 after the first quarter.

“We moved the ball well, we weren’t just settling for jump shots. We just weren’t making the shots,” said Lett. “You saw the game, how many layups did we miss? We’d get (the ball) inside, miss the shot, get the rebound and miss it again.”

Izaya Diaz was the only player to hit double figures for Central (2-7) with 10 points. Daywon Tyler-Fulse added five, all in the first quarter.

By contrast, Windham (7-3) put three players in double figures, led by 19 from Jack Begley and 17 from Jack Koutrobis.

The host Jaguars settled matters early, racing out to a 10-point lead after one quarter and expanding the advantage to 38-22 by halftime.

The 41 points marked Central’s lowest offensive output of the season, especially disappointing coming off the Little Green’s huge 81-76 upset of crosstown rival Memorial, last week.

“After Memorial, we had hoped to build some momentum heading into our game with Pinkerton but our game against (winless) Concord was postponed because of weather (to Feb. 12),” said Lett. “So, here we are.”

Any hope Central had for a comeback, Friday night, was snuffed out quickly after intermission. Tyler Jorden drained an early 3-pointer and scored seven of his 12 points in the third quarter, helping the Windham swell its lead to 60-32 and the rout was on.

Things don’t get any easier for Central, as it looks to try and turn its season around. The Little Green play host to No. 2 Pinkerton (10-1), Tuesday night. The Astros, a team that has topped 90 points in six games already, promise to be in a foul mood, coming off a shocking 74-58 upset loss to Dover (5-5).
