‘Careless disposal of smoking material’ sparks Beech Street house fire

MANCHESTER, NH – A fire sparked by improperly disposed of smoking material at a residence on Beech Street did about $100,000 in damage Friday, according to fire officials.

Below is the report issued by Manchester Fire Battalion Chief Kenneth Proulx:

Description of Incident: Companies were dispatched to 885 Beech St. at 9:38 a.m. for a reported building fire, first arriving E5 encountered moderate smoke coming from the building and reported a working fire. E5 advanced a hose line to the first floor extinguishing the flames quickly.

Crews conducted a quick primary and secondary search of the building and reported an “All Clear.” One occupant was home at the time of the fire and evacuated himself from the building. The structure sustained severe fire damage to the first floor and significant heat damage to the second floor. One occupant was displaced and was being assisted by family and the Red Cross.ย 

Civilian Injuries: Noneย 

Emergency Service Injuries: Noneย 

Special Circumstances: Cold temperatures and Icey conditions were present, but did not hamper firefighting operations.ย 

Fire Cause: This fire was caused by careless disposal of smoking materials and is classified as accidental.

Estimated Dollar Loss: Approximately 80 to 100K of loss, and 150K to 200K of property saved.ย
