MANCHESTER, NH – Manchester Fire crews were dispatched Thursday to the West Side at about 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of heavy smoke from residents in the area of the Piscataquog River, near the Goffstown line.
The fire was located on the east side of the river in Manchester. Crews originally on scene were engine 6 and 2 from Manchester as well as a Goffstown engine company. Multiple lines were stretched into the woods approximately 600 feet off Upland Street on Manchesterโs West Side.
The area burning was approximately two acres but grew to about four acres total before adequate water could be brought to the scene. A second alarm was called to bring more resources to the scene. The fire proved to be extremely labor-intensive and crews had to be rotated with fresh crews because of the heat.
The fire burned deep into the ground and proved to be a stubborn fire to put out. Under control was given at 10:05 p.m. and crews cleared the scene

The wooded area where the fire burned had the remnants of several abandoned homeless camps. It did not appear any of the camps were currently occupied at the time of the fire.
Manchester Fire Marshalโs Office will investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
