Slipping into Darkness

travelalaska.com

Utqiagvik, Alaska, has entered its polar night, marking 65 days without a glimpse of the sun.

This week, the northernmost town in North America will bid farewell to daylight as it begins its annual polar night. The sun wonโ€™t return until January 22, 2026. Once known as Barrow, this small town sits at Alaskaโ€™s northern tip, about 300 miles above the Arctic Circle, making it the continentโ€™s northernmost community. During the polar night, the only natural light comes from the dim twilight along the southern horizon and the occasional shimmering glow of the Aurora Borealis above. After the sun sets on Tuesday, Utqiagvik wonโ€™t see it rise again until January 22, 2026.
