The day after the snow fell, I woke up early, threw on my neon pink snowsuit, and ate my breakfast with the veracity of cat that hasn’t been fed in 2-3 hours. I rushed outside, and the day flew by. At one point, gazing up at that dirty gray chunk of street snow, I had a genius idea. Like Mallory and Irving gazing up the impossible form of Everest, I decided – I MUST climb and descend such a glorious mountain. Successfully.

I wasn’t around in the ’80s, but lucky for me it was such an iconic era that there were lasting echoes which managed to reach even us kids from the late nineties and early 2000s. One of those echoes was the satanic panic. It’s a fascinating yet devastating situation that started as a mistake and snowballed into a conspiracy that affected thousands, resulting in decades of trauma, jail time, and, more relevant than ever, the modern interpretation of the Epstein files.

Manchganistan vs Manchvegas: Where do you live?

I could tell a hundred stories like this, but you get the point. Manchester isn’t a scary place. Unless, maybe you scare easily. I make an effort to talk to everyone that approaches me, and not everyone wants to do that. I accepted money from a drunk woman when she saw me walking home with the cat I’d just rescued in a rainstorm. I learned French behind Cat Alley from a Congolese man on my lunch break. Maybe doing those things are risky behaviors. I think they are the bare minimum of accepting socialization when it offers itself to you.

Repeated phrases with this fake-deep intensity that isn’t necessarily inappropriate, but a little weird for a 5-point response to a participation grade.

This anxiety is really cramping my style, because I’ve found from experience that most people are willing to tell you about themselves more if you tell them about you. I’ve been stewing over this for a while and here’s what I think the problem is – I don’t have anything to complain about.

The first time I spotted one of these was in August of 2024. I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I knew I had seen something like it before online. That summer and fall, it seemed like everywhere I went in Manchester I saw them. But no one else seemed to notice and whenever I brought up the “lines and squares graffiti on the ground” no one knew what I was talking about.

Small business and being online at the end of the world

I lost my job because of an online customer review. I don’t know the person’s name who wrote it, and I’ll never get to tell them what happened to me because of it. The person who fired me didn’t want to – she told me straightforwardly, “it’s my boss’s decision, I have no choice.” Her boss, if I know her at all, would also probably say, “it’s a business issue- nothing against you, but I have no choice.”
