We had a good run together. When all was said and done, we spent more than four decades with each other. I would say that there were more good times than bad, but all good times must come to an end.
This evening, following a morning and an afternoon of rain showers, Dr. Heavey and I were attempting the 9-9-9 Challenge. For those unfamiliar, the rules are simple—although somewhat convoluted, depending on the source—basically stating that each contestant must finish nine beers and nine hot dogs in the course of a nine-inning baseball game.
While I understand the sentiment, this is analogous to treating cancer with Tylenol. The people who are really responsible for the dumpster fire that has been the 2026 Red Sox remain unscathed, largely Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, who essentially lit the match.
And when it comes to baseball, I’m a bit of a purist. I enjoy seeing the game when played as close as possible to its original design in the 1840s when The Knickerbocker Club of New York City played at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, N.J.
Her doomscrolling, however, has become habitual. It is not only when we’re watching television.
