Missy Mahoney has been playing women’s football for two years. Prior to joining the NH Rebellion, Mahoney was an ardent flag football player. A regular at every practice, Mahoney most often plays linebacker, though sometimes lines up at tight end. She will turn 38 on April 17.
Kelsey Silva, a resident of Dracut, Mass., has an easy smile no matter which position she is playing in for the New Hampshire Rebellion. Thus far, she has played at tackle, guard, tight end, fullback, wide receiver, and linebacker. Although she stands at little more than 5 feet tall, Silva, 23, has nevertheless found a way to utilize her strength to overpower larger opponents.
On Saturday, March 9, the Party for Socialism and Liberation of Southern New Hampshire (PSL) organized an event at the Green Beautiful Cafe to commemorate the holiday. They called the event Revolutionary Women’s History: Craft and Learn. The theme of the event was to make collages from newspapers and magazines to express oneself.
Standing 5 feet tall, Rachel McManmon is the shortest player on the field when the NH Rebellion women’s football team takes the field on offense. She lines up at center, and when hunched over to snap the ball, becomes shorter still. Yet, despite her size, she is in many ways an anchor for the offense; a steady, reliable person who ensures the first action of any offensive play goes smoothly.
Soon after the New Year came around in 2024, Republican lawmakers in the New Hampshire state government submitted a series of bills aimed at fundamentally ending all legal recognition of any kind for transgender individuals. Bills submitted this year echo those submitted last year, which were part of a nationwide effort to deny transgender people access to medical care, use of public restrooms, and disallowing playing on sports teams that conform with their gender identity, among others.
In order to afford rent at one-third of a household’s monthly income, that household would need to make $5,292 a month or $63,504 a year. A single income would need to make 33 dollars an hour, while two people working the same schedule would need to make $16.53 an hour.
Ken Jue, a longtime resident of Keene, spent his career as a mental health professional. In this capacity, he came across a startling conclusion: people with mental health disorders lived shorter lives than the rest of the population. To him, this was unacceptable. If he could, he would do something about it.
People started gathering around the First Baptist Church on Union Street on a Saturday morning for a yearly event that had become a local tradition. The Church, conveniently located near the Manchester City Library and the Families in Transition emergency shelter, saw around 200 people gather for an unusual service, together with a food giveaway and a free shopping event.
The cafe’s example of giving is but one among many people and organizations from all walks of life doing what they can to assist Manchester’s homeless community.
