March came in like a lamb with my first grocery shopping trip of the month, but all signs point to it going out a like a lion. Economy disruptions caused by the war in Iran, which are already being seen, will likely have a big impact in the weeks to come. Add to that continuing tariff craziness and just plain old changing of seasons, and things are poised to get crazier, price-wise.

After a few relatively tranquil months, the December grocery snapshot’s ups and downs are whiplash-inducing. It’s a great lesson in looking at what goes on over the long run. Affordability has become the word of the season, and many stores that can afford to drop prices, at least for the season, are listening.

The latest with the tariffs is that a federal appeals court has upheld the earlier ruling of the Court of International Trade that most of Trump’s global tariffs are not legal, and he exceeded his authority in using emergency powers to impose them. That said, the courts are allowing the tariffs to remain while Trump’s administration appeals to the Supreme Court.
