We chose Firefly American Bistro at 22 Concord St. We’ve eaten there before and have always enjoyed the ambiance as well as the food.  We wondered how a winter drive-thru experience would compare. The menu appealed to us as did the promise of curbside pickup. Of note, they offer free delivery within 8 miles of the restaurant with a $50+ purchase but we wanted an excuse to get out even if it were just for cruising a short stint down Elm Street.

I did not know Chip Kennett, but his death affected me because just a year earlier I had met cancer research evangelist Dave Bjork. He, too, was diagnosed with lung cancer in his early 30s. He, too, has never smoked and as a survivor has become a real advocate for putting money directly in the hands of researchers and for raising awareness of the work that needs to be done. The stigma around lung cancer as a smoker’s disease has hampered progress and yet, more than 20 percent of all lung cancer patients today are non-smokers.

After a year filled with all kinds of surprises, I’ve learned to pace myself, accept that I can’t predict today, let alone anything in the future, and therefore I’ve made myself fully present, right here, right now. If perseverance got us through 2020 then creativity and flexibility will be key components for success in 2021.

And this is where COVID-19 has opened the door to deeper discussions. Perhaps we should not be trying to put together things the way they were because things will never be exactly the same as they were when we adults went to school. We need a partnership between students, entrepreneurs, parents, schools, businesses and government to make it all work.

Each day we choose with our time, our attention and our money that which is important to us.  The people rallying to save the Chandler house are distinctive in their respectful, visible approach but make no mistake, this is a protest against the destruction of a historic building. Though these people stand in vigil and bear witness to the choice the Diocese can make, it will be the future citizens of Manchester and the unforgiving world of Google search that will tell the story of the Chandler House.
