The judges felt that Nikita’s art piece expressed an understanding of the power of standing together to “grow” from negativity. The depiction of a flower with incomplete petals indicates that Nikita understands that the work is not done, that today’s children must create a positive environment, in spite of historic negativity.

City Year corps members work in six of Manchester’s elementary schools – Bakersville, Beech Street, Gossler Park, McDonough, Parker-Varney and Wilson – providing support and mentorship to students. They work closely with children in academic subjects such as math, reading and writing, as well as encouraging attendance and social or emotional learning.
Mariel was nominated for the opportunity to join the Advisory Panel on Student Opportunity by her guidance counselor at West, Eli Glass. She is one of 16 student members who represent different regions of the country, come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, and are at different stages in their academic careers.
