This summer, the New Hampshire Department of Education (NHED) is continuing its work with eligible organizations to serve free meals and snacks to children through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s SUN Meals and SUN Meals To-Go, also known as the Summer Food Service Program.
There are currently 38 approved charter schools in the state, with 32 schools now in operation and five planning to open in the fall of 2025.* Three additional schools are working through the application process and could potentially open in the fall of 2026.

The public comment period on the proposed changes to the minimum standards – known as the 306 rules – came to a close April 30. A total of 204 written testimonies were sent to the state Board of Education and made public on the department’s website. All except one of the 204 written accounts were in opposition to the current revisions.
After an hour-long public conversation with the commissioner of the NH Department of Education, school board members in Manchester – the state’s largest school district– remained frustrated by a lack of clear answers and unconvinced that proposed revisions to the state’s minimum standards for public schools, known as the 306s, will improve education in the Granite state.
By Monday, all 178 school districts across New Hampshire will be educating the state’s 178,000 students remotely, according to Frank Edelblut, commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Education.
Should these waivers be granted, all meals would be free to students at all locations, and families would be able to bring meals home to reduce contact between participants.
