If Memorial High’s stunning loss to Salem in the Division I quarterfinals, earlier this month, left a bad taste in the mouths of Crusader players and coaches, Thursday’s win over West in Turkey Bowl XLIII was sweet as Granny’s homemade pumpkin pie.
Most families in the United States have their Thanksgiving traditions: turkey, pie, gratitude, and perhaps at least one confidently delivered “fact” that isn’t actually a fact. This year, we’ve got you covered.
“In the past year, Gather has seen an unprecedented demand across all its anti-hunger programs – higher than ever in its 200-year history,” Anne Hayes, Gather executive director, said in a news release. “We’re now serving an average of 10,500 individuals each month, a 24% increase over 2023, and providing nearly 80,000 prepared meals, a 26% increase over 2023. So this makes sense that we’re seeing hundreds of people at our Thanksgiving event.”
An ironclad defense, a workhorse running back and some extra-special special teams play carried Memorial to a 15-0 win over crosstown rival Central, in the 41st Turkey Bowl, Thursday morning at Gill Stadium.
As we approach Thanksgiving, many people focus on travel, food, and football. Others think about – with impending doom I might add – Black Friday and the “crazy holiday season.” Others think about family gatherings – including some in our families who we see once a year and give their bold opinions about religion and politics. Some family members may annoy us and we may annoy them…but we’re family.

Feasting around harvest time is also something humans have been doing forever, contrary to popular lore. Giving thanks for sustenance was not a ritual invented 400 years ago by a boatload of Puritan refugees fleeing unrest in their home country, seeking safe harbor and a new beginning on Wampanoag shores.
On Nov. 21 Manchester Christian Church sponsored “One Day of Thanks,” at the Salvation Army in Manchester with an assist from Central Hockey players and the City Athletic Director.
It was assembly day in more ways than one as close to 100 volunteers gathered at a warehouse on Perimeter Road to set in motion the 5th annual Shire Sharing Thanksgiving food drive.
