In a statement released Sunday by U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the deal would also reinstate thousands of fired federal workers and restore the appropriations process that includes funding for SNAP, WIC and health care for veterans.
“I think the thing that is most encouraging to me overall over the trajectory of the opioid epidemic is just that we have begun to see it as a challenge that we all need to address together. And we’ve begun to understand that it’s not a character failing, that it’s an illness that can be treated, that we can learn more and more about it, and learn about what works and use evidence to address the problem and make sure that we’re reducing deaths and preventing addiction to begin with. “
“As we heard this morning, as we were talking about what the impact of potential cuts to the AmeriCorps program would be, it’s not going to save money,” said Senator Shaheen. “What it’s going to do is downshift those costs to local communities, and it’s going to actually cost us more. So this is all a foolhardy effort.”
“And the fact, I was hoping that she actually would be able to respond accurately to the question of what habeas corpus is and I was anticipating that we would have perhaps a difference of opinion about how easy it is for a president to decide to suspend it, what kind of process they have to do. And instead, I found that she was giving me a definition that was completely inverted.”
Senator Hassan began by saying, “ On Memorial Day, we honor the heroes who gave their lives for our country, who gave up everything just so that others, people whom they never met, could live in freedom. With their sacrifice, they purchased for us not only freedom from tyranny and the freedom to live in a democracy, but also the freedom to experience a multitude of life’s ordinary moments
“I’d just like to say that as public educators, our number one commitment is to do what is best for our students. And we achieve that through federal funding. So, largely our federal funding. goes to our most at-risk kids. It is students from low-income families. It is students who are homeless. It is students with social and emotional needs.”
