MANCHESTER, NH – Fire investigators say a kitchen fire was the cause of a fire at 22-24 Mitchell St. on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews responded at 1:45 p.m. to the four-unit apartment after residents living on the first floor heard smoke alarms in an upstairs apartment.
They went upstairs to investigate and found that the door to the upstairs apartment was hot, and called the fire department.
Firefighters laid hoses and made entry to the building and did an initial search, finding no one inside the upstairs apartment.
During a second search a dog was found and rescued from the building, which was gutted by fire. AMR paramedics administered oxygen to the dog and then rushed the animal to an emergency veterinarian.
“Unfortunately, the dog did not survive,” said Fire District Chief Hank Martineau.
One of the four units was unoccupied. In total, seven people were displaced, including the five-member family downstairs and two occupants of the second-floor apartment where the fire originated.
One firefighter suffered an injury after rolling his ankle during the operation, said Martineau. He was treated and released.
Martineau estimated the damage at about $70,000.
