At about 10:30 p.m. fire crews from Merrimack Street station responded to 102 Bay St. for a reported fire which was visible from the first floor of the building. The fire extended to the second floor and attic and was rising 20-feet above the roof. Crews entered the building to search for occupants and, finding none, focused on extinguishing the blaze.

It took three crews a full 40 minutes to control the fire, and additional crews were brought in to assist, as the intense heat took a physical toll on firefighters, according to District Chief Michael Gamache.Screen Shot 2015-07-14 at 7.24.41 AM

Due to the construction of the century-old building, there were several concealed spaces that added a particular challenge for fire crews. One firefighter was evaluated and treated at the scene by AMR ambulance personnel, but was not transported.
