MANCHESTER, NH – Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1837, and union allies, will return to Eversource NH headquarters, 780 North Commercial street, Manchester, NH, for an informational picket on Wednesday, September 3, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Additionally, IBEW 1837 will be holding a digital picket on Thursday, September 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The demonstration comes as negotiations for a first contract covering Eversource System Operators continue at a slow pace. These operators, who manage the transmission and distribution electric grids across Eversource’s New Hampshire service territory, voted to join IBEW in late 2023. Despite their clear choice and the National Labor Relations Board confirming their eligibility for union representation, progress toward a first agreement has been minimal.
“Operators have been leaving both control centers, creating a critical shortage of trained operators,” said Tony Sapienza, Business Manager for IBEW Local 1837. “The shortage of trained operators is forcing the remaining operators to work additional shifts. These employees are responsible for keeping the Transmission and Distribution grids safe and reliable across New Hampshire. They deserve a fair contract that ensures their work can be done without risking burnout.”
The Union has stressed that Eversource must bargain in good faith and agree to a fair contract that addresses retention and recruitment of the highly skilled workforce needed to operate New Hampshire’s power system safely.
In addition to the September 3 in-person picket, IBEW Local 1837 will also hold a digital picket on Thursday, September 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. ahead of scheduled negotiations with the Company. “Information on how to participate in the digital picket is included in this email” OR “Further details will be shared in the coming days.”
