Massive solar storm illuminates U.S. skies

A powerful solar storm lit up the skies with northern lights as far south as Florida on Tuesday night. According to NOAAโ€™s Space Weather Prediction Center, the X5.1 solar flare that day was the sixth largest of the solar cycle and possibly among the top 39 flares in the modern space age. A rare Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch, rated level 4 out of 5, remains in effect through Wednesday.

The flare sent charged particles racing toward Earth, sparking a radiation storm and possibly setting off the northern lights as far south as the Southeast later this week.
