Opponents of the conversion of the former Daniel Webster Boy Scouts of America headquarters to a 20-bed residence for women in recovery had appealed the board’s Jan. 11 decision to approve the variance. The complaints charged that opponents weren’t given a fair amount of time to air their concerns, that the board ignored evidence, and that Chair Anne Ketterer had “coerced” one member into voting for the variance.

The IRS on Tuesday launched its new free Direct File tax program in 12 states, including New Hampshire for taxpayers with simple returns who take the standard deduction. The IRS estimates that about one-third of all taxpayers in the pilot states are eligible for the program. The program, which has been up and running in a more limited form for a month, is available in both English and Spanish versions.

Imagine that you have tickets for really good seats at a Taylor Swift concert, but as you’re driving there, in sight of the stadium, you inexplicably turn around and go home. No concert. No contact, or even a glimpse, of one of the biggest stars in the music universe. Nothing. That, according to author and eclipse chaser David Baron, is the equivalent of not traveling on April 8 to the path of totality for the solar eclipse.
