I will be opposing HB 639, the so-called “cryptocurrency freedom” bill now before the Senate. Despite its libertarian rhetoric of innovation and “financial opportunity,” the measure is a blueprint for deregulation that would invite precisely the abuses and inequalities that scholar Finn Brunton warns of in his recent New York Times essay on the true nature of cryptocurrency.

I say this because I’ve seen it with my own eyes: a line of people in ski masks on Main Street, holding signs telling others to “go back to where you came from,” “no gays allowed,” “we hate Jews” – and the list goes on. Is that their “trick”? To show up, hide their faces, and try to scare people with their hate? Because, honestly, it looks less like a trick and more like cowardice dressed up as protest.

As we return to school, we look forward to a year of learning together, building friendships, and fostering community. Yet, it seems that heated rhetoric and attacks on debate and dialogue have been at the forefront of the media and across college campuses. The September 10th assaination of Charlie Kirk has brought non-stop coverage and contention throughout the country. Some of us knew him, and others didn’t, but in the days that followed we all learned about his life and his conservative beliefs. Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University, fatally shot while engaging in debate. Kirk was on his first of ten stops at college campuses around the country, with a stop scheduled for New Hampshire.
