My Thoughts, Exactly: You’ve got a friend in me

I was listening to music the other day, and the song, “You’ve got a friend in me” from the 1995 movie, Toy Story, came on. This made me think of other songs, such as “Stand by Me,” (from the 1986 movie of the same name), and “That’s what friends are for.” This led me to think about the importance of true friendship. Now I’m not talking about Facebook friends, (although some on the platform can be real friends too), but those people in our lives that are true friends.

Power of Connection

I was recently talking to a friend about personal connections, and we were discussing how even though GenZ, (born 1997- 2012), are more connected than any generation in history, they are the loneliest, and have the highest suicide rates of any previous generation. (GenAlpha has just reached adolescence and GenBeta started in 2025, so limited to no stats are available on them).

No Comparison

I was talking to a friend on Friday, and we were discussing how everyone is different. We talked about how some people are introverts, some are extroverts, and some are ambiverts. Although I believe that everyone has tendencies of all three, people fall primarily into one of the three classifications.

Live theatre for all!

Having seen a few productions at the Palace, including an incredible performance of “A Christmas Carol,” my wife and I decided that we will be purchasing a membership so that we can enjoy more live shows along with the perks. This has gotten me thinking about how live theatre is perceived among young people, particularly the price. The big unknown to many in GenZ is why theatre tickets cost what they do, and why they are significantly more expensive than a movie ticket. The question then becomes, “why not just see the movie?”

New Year, same you

The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is usually filled with advertisements, many from gyms, stating how they can help one become a better version of themselves in the new year. (I do not have a problem with gyms advertising, but find it interesting, if not predictable).

Simply enjoying Christmas

I love the Christmas season! I love Christmas! As a follower of Jesus, I celebrate His birth as well as the Hope that He brings to our crazy world, but I also recognize that Christmas has become more of a cultural and commercial holiday. I myself celebrate Christmas in part by buying gifts, attending plays and celebrations, and watching movies, (including those that have the “magic of Christmas”). I just stay grounded and keep Jesus at the center of everything that I do around the holiday – I remember it is really about His birth.

Darkness vs. Light

I was recently listening to a friend talk about how dark the nation – and the world – has become. I couldn’t help but agree with him – it seems that we are living in a very dark place as of late. I do not remember a time when there was so much negativity or darkness as we have now. We rarely see positive stories on the news, and social media is constantly filled with negative stories and the “keyboard warriors” who tend to leave nasty comments.

Attacking free speech

The shooting death of Charlie Kirk on September 10th has created a range of emotions from people who either liked – or disagreed but respected – him and from those who did not particularly like him. Like him or not, the massive effect he had on people as well as the increased engagement and boldness because of his death cannot be denied.

Every rose has its thorn: Some misconceptions of Christians and the church

I was recently having a discussion with a friend regarding Jesus when their friend spoke up and said that they did not believe in all that “hocus pocus” religious stuff and that preachers just want money to live their lavish lifestyles while the rest of us try to make ends meet. They also added that so-called Christians are nothing but hypocrites who pretend to love each other on Sundays.
