After the state of New Hampshire cruelly evicted a homeless encampment on the Chestnut Street courthouse Lawn back in November, I thought the City of Manchester was an ally in the fight for our homeless community. After residents of the Amoskeag Bridge encampment were given less than 24 hours to vacate their property yesterday, I question that notion.
When I arrived in Sin City—I can still remember the illumination on the desert horizon, like a synthetic sunrise, while driving into the Vegas lights from I-15 at night—I discovered that the high school where I would be teaching English had roughly the same number of students as Plymouth State, where I had completed my undergraduate degree six months earlier.
Encountering Murphy’s Law a few times every week for weeks on end wears both patience and stamina. When I bought my RV, I trusted the seller was telling the truth when they said it “ran like a champ.” That turned out to be false. Now it only runs with a clamp holding down a battery connector in the engine. The windshield is broken, and the exhaust pipe underneath has rusted apart to the point where it looks like it might have exploded. Had the seller described the vehicle as “for parts” or “needs repair,” I would have not bought it.
Indeed, a single-minded devotion to individual freedom has left many well-meaning pro-life conservatives and libertarians tongue-tied when accused by “choicers” of contradiction between their devotion to freedom and small, limited government and their opposition to “freedom of choice” on abortion.
The answer is not to work harder no matter what, not to push through despite your emotional and physical exhaustion. Rather, we’ve attempted to turn to our Lazy Brain in an effort to set new expectations, to create an environment appropriate to the time in which we live.
This bill is dangerous to NH taxpayers. This bill will increase property taxes and will hurt our public schools.
