We started our tour of the White Mountains at Franconia’s Stone Iron Furnace. I never realized that New Hampshire had mined iron ore and I was interested to read that this furnace is “New Hampshire’s sole surviving example of a post-Revolutionary furnace for smelting iron ore.

By not vaccinating teachers, the Governor is also prolonging the challenges our economy is facing. If small business owners and employees have to watch their kids at home because schools are closed, their businesses have to remain closed, too. By vaccinating teachers in the first phase, we can ensure that our schools stay open, which will keep businesses open, support New Hampshire’s workforce, and jumpstart the economy.

Continuing our explorations in the Lakes Region, we headed to Rochester.  In addition to seeing all the roadside historical markers, we were also taking part in the Five Hikes Challenge sponsored by the  Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. One of the hikes was in Champlin Forest in Rochester. It was nice to take a peaceful walk in the woods, followed by a socially distanced visit with friends, in between drives to markers.

I did not know Chip Kennett, but his death affected me because just a year earlier I had met cancer research evangelist Dave Bjork. He, too, was diagnosed with lung cancer in his early 30s. He, too, has never smoked and as a survivor has become a real advocate for putting money directly in the hands of researchers and for raising awareness of the work that needs to be done. The stigma around lung cancer as a smoker’s disease has hampered progress and yet, more than 20 percent of all lung cancer patients today are non-smokers.
