We are currently working vigorously to achieve our ambitious goal of painting over 2,000 square feet of murals at West High School in Manchester. We would love to have anyone who is interested in seeing what we have been working on these past few weeks to attend our mural unveiling on August 17 from 6-8 p.m. There will be delicious food for sale by Don Quijote Restaurant, refreshments, fire playlists and music played by a local string trio starring Nicholas So.

From a diverse catalog that includes a community member who experienced homelessness, a woman living with dyslexia, a police officer, and a young woman who served as a surrogate, guests or “readers” will be able to have one on one, 20-minute conversations with these and other human books. Each book has a compelling story waiting to be told. Each has encountered adversity, and each has been the subject of marginalization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, religion, differing abilities or gender identification.

If you’ve never seen a conveyor belt of cats and dogs being unloaded from a chartered airplane into the waiting arms of animal lovers whose job it will be to find them forever homes, it looks a lot like hope. On Aug. 2 that hopeful scene unfolded at Wiggins Aviation at the Boston-Manchester Regional Airport.

My daughter has always leaned more toward outdoorsy pursuits, getting her hair muddy as she studies tadpoles for example. But Theatre Camp has provided a new and surprising sort of challenge. Words, and song. The fact that it’s the Little Mermaid helps, but memorization is a different sort of pursuit than, say, fishing or hiking. Putting on a half-hour theatrical show with a dozen second- and third-graders, and doing it in one week, seems to me, to be far more challenging.

This year the annual event is promised to be “bigger and better than ever,” according to Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg, with 55 community partners involved – plus the NH Army National Guard helicopter, Seacoast United Soccer, Laura Boyce from Rock 101 and Chris Ryan from WGIR-AM and a special appearance by Chaos & Kindness. Attendees can expect games, giveaways and much more – especially a chance to connect with neighbors and friends.

The Fair opens Saturday, August 5 on the grounds of the Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury and will run through Sunday, August 13.
