Standing 5 feet tall, Rachel McManmon is the shortest player on the field when the NH Rebellion women’s football team takes the field on offense. She lines up at center, and when hunched over to snap the ball, becomes shorter still. Yet, despite her size, she is in many ways an anchor for the offense; a steady, reliable person who ensures the first action of any offensive play goes smoothly.

For the first time in 50 years the State Boxing and Wrestling Commission will not include Bobby Stephen. The long-time chairman retired last year, ending a remarkable era for combat sports in the Granite State. Originally appointed by Gov. Meldrim Thompson in 1973 to what was then called the “State Athletic Commission, ” Stephen was re-appointed by 10 governors, a testament to his abilities as a commissioner and, perhaps, his greater skill at dodging political hooks and uppercuts.

The Central High senior, along with her teammates and the Memorial High athletes scheduled to compete in the Division I State Championship meet on Sunday, almost didn’t make it to Plymouth State University, when their bus broke down on I-93. Thanks to fast action by Manchester School District Athletic Director Christine Pariseau-Telge and others, the Manchester athletes arrived at the George E. Davis track three minutes before the meet was slated to begin at 4:30 p.m.
