Drawing and painting portraits all started fittingly enough with one of Courtney Love in 1995 for Ellie Swiezynski, as she and her spouse Melissa LeClerc are big concert fans. Her early shaded pencil work has given way to vibrant acrylics on wood. Swiezynski will be displaying her work in the Pride vendor area in Veteran’s Park on June 15, the day of Manchester’s Pride parade.

The Power of Murals: A canvas for community and change

Murals are not just about aesthetics; they bring tangible benefits to communities. Studies have shown that public art can drive economic growth by attracting visitors and boosting local businesses. Cities with vibrant public art scenes often see a 20% increase in foot traffic, as murals turn ordinary streets into tourist destinations. This influx of visitors translates into economic benefits for nearby shops, restaurants, and service providers.

Why Christian denominations?

after having similar conversations with a few teens and tweens in the youth group – who are the same generation as our son (GenZ) or the Generation following his (GenAlpha) I decided to explore this a little further. I was unable to find specific studies on any denominational bonds among younger Americans, only studies about the lack of Christian affiliation among the younger generations (which I already knew).

It’s a bad month to be a homophobe

Simply stated, the people who object to Pride Month are often the same people who have made Pride Month a necessity. They are also often the same people who will wrap themselves in an American flag and tout the virtues of freedom, while wanting to oppress the rights of others; or the same people who grab their Bibles and claim to be walking in the shadow Jesus, while practicing prejudice and intolerance.

The Paradox of the Carceral System

When the news broke about the verdict last Thursday, the internet was buzzing with reaction and commentary from every corner. There were comments about the legitimacy of the trial and verdict, and there was celebration that ‘justice had been served’ and ‘no one is above the law.” More than either of those, the comments about the new status of “felon” for the former president were the comments that created the most interesting paradox in many interactions.

On May 13 and 14, as part of a parking lot repaving upgrade project directed by Market Basket (MB) in Milford, NH, and carried out by the contractor Continental Paving, about a half-acre of wet pond at the property’s entrance was dredged. The pond, designed in 1995 for stormwater drainage, had become populated by a dense stand of cattails that served as a nesting site for red-winged blackbirds and grackles.

Keeping the wall between church and state

I want to make it clear that I believe that there is a difference between the Separation of Church and State and the outright removal of God from the public square. For example, I do not believe that “In God We Trust” needs to be removed from money because it is a phrase and I do not believe that it alone establishes a religion. However, like John Locke, I believe in religious tolerance and believe that the government should be a secular institution. I believe that the government should serve the interests of all citizens regardless of their religious beliefs.

This goes out to all you camp swim class drop-outs

I admit that I learned to swim when I was 50. Yes, I had gone to numerous day and overnight camps during my youth, each summer entering the programs already apprehensive about swimming classes where it wasn’t “free swim” but, gasp, swimming lessons. After all those years, I never “graduated” out of the beginner’s class. Never. Did you hear me? NEVER! Kicking? Okay. Arms rotating in the water? Okay. Head underwater? No way! I had my eyes closed tight not able to see anything and that’s as far as it went. Deep water over my head so I couldn’t stand up?  I’d rather jump off a mountain — with my eyes wide open.

I was a teacher for 15 years. I taught thousands of students on three continents. Until 2019, I had never met a “transgender” child. Ten years ago, no one would have told a child they can change their biological sex with blockers, opposite-sex hormones, and surgeries. Now, anyone who challenges that idea is subjected to ridicule, called a bigot, transphobe or worse.
