The goodwill and commitment to helping NH neighbors in need was front and center on February 10 in Concord for the 18th Annual Mardi Gras Gala. Over 300 attendees came together at the Grappone Conference Center, with over $222,000 in net proceeds raised to directly support the Catholic Charities NH programs that bring positive change to thousands of NH residents each year.

Often, there is an unspoken understanding that the month of February should invoke strong feelings of pride, determination, and motivation for everyone, but most notably those who identify as Black or African American. And while that is certainly true for a lot of people, there is a more complex understanding of how the celebration of Black History Month can feel, when Black folk are a small minority population of an area. Those complexities can usher in mixed feelings about Black identity and its perception of the diaspora at large.

There is NO way this bill will get a fair hearing. This kind of manipulation (forming special taxpayer-funded lobbying groups and committees) is typical of Sununu and his developer cronies after they fail to pass unsavory bills the normal way.

A real-life example is that of House Majority Leader Jason Osborne (R-Auburn). His 2023 financial disclosure does not mention that his wife, Sharon Osborne, serves as Chairman of the Board at Latitude Learning, a homeschool cooperative. Rep. Osborne is required to report this potential conflict in his disclosure. However, this oversight is not his only violation of the public trust.

I passed by Billy Cooper on my way on foot down Elm Street. He was busy squeegeeing the big pane at Birch on Elm, getting it streak-free in time for their 5 p.m. Friday night dinner service.  On the way back down Elm it looked like Billy was packing up for the night so I stopped to say hello.

Last week the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 193-179 to adopt the recommendation for HB 1002, a well-intentioned but seriously flawed bill that could have significant consequences on the public’s right to know about government activities if it becomes law. A request to reconsider that vote has been placed by Lisa Smart (R-Meredith) and hopefully the House can take this opportunity to reverse last week’s decision.
