Arnold Mikolo, an environmental justice advocate with the Conservation Law Foundation, said people in Manchester have been raising alarms about lead for a long time. The problem has been especially hard on immigrant and refugee communities, he said, who are often living in substandard housing.

“This is a transformational program when you think about it,” Fitzpatrick said. “We talk about food deserts, we talk about food insecurity – we’re removing the barriers and making this happen for our families. Every week families get this amazing little voucher,” she said, holding up a blue piece of paper good for $30 of produce from the cart. “It’s pretty exciting to see the kids go shopping for fresh blueberries and strawberries.”

Over the weekend a group of about 30 people, many of whom have been living homeless in the city for well over a year, returned to a nomadic existence. They were moved several times by police who have been citing them for various violations of city ordinances that address sidewalk encumbrances and public/private property.

However, the true bridge builders of the day were Kaylee Richard and Sam Grenier, two high school students who have grown up with the Girls at Work program.
