Despite explanations from two different state police departments and two neighboring city government officials, it’s still hard to fathom why a homeless woman from Maine was driven 60 miles south by Sanford Police to a homeless shelter in Manchester, where there was no bed waiting for her.

Each year, Manchester Firefighters partner with a national non-profit called Operation Warm to give out brand-new winter coats to kids within the community. Money for the effort is raised throughout the year by way of public and private donations. Coats are purchased in bulk through Operation Warm and distributed to children at public schools around Manchester.

It’s 7:30 p.m. and Mary Chevalier is sorting the new 1269-branded T-shirts and sweatshirts by size. Each volunteer will wear one during the overnight shift, to identify them as staff. On the back of the shirts is a quote from scripture that comes from Proverbs 14:25 and reads, “A true witness rescues lives…” In the context of the passage, the quote applies to honesty and the consequences of bearing false witness. But in the context of the 1269 Cafe, it says everything about their mission: Saving lost souls through human kindness.

Last year, the City of Manchester received $25 million in Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grants to put toward connected infrastructure projects that the city believes will completely transform the south Elm Street area. On Wednesday night, residents came to the Manchester Public Library to learn more about the projects that will be primarily funded by those grants and share their questions and concerns.

Elliot Health System recently recognized four Emergency Medical Services members of Derry Fire Department and Auburn Fire Department who saved the life of Peggy Bolduc, Auburn resident, after a 9-1-1 call for help. The responders stabilized her and transported her to The Elliot where Emergency Department providers were able to facilitate treatment with the cardiology team.
