I live in Bedford and in March 2025 the town overwhelmingly voted “NO” (3663 NO to 1220 YES) on a petition warrant article to implement a tax cap on the school budget. Therefore, I was confused and upset when five of the seven of our district’s representatives in the NH House voted in favor of implementing automatic budget caps on school budgets. Our town helped to elect those five representatives, and they knew how Bedford had voted in March. Why weren’t they thinking of their constituents?

In many places, libraries are facing budget cuts, closures, or even attacks on the kinds of books they carry. This is just not right.  Reading is a gift to be shared by all.  Others have no right to remove books from shelves to reduce access for others.

At the April 15th budget hearing, hundreds of community members showed up in support of our school district, with 60 speaking in favor of adequate funding. Only one individual spoke in opposition, a reflection of the disconnect between educators, students, families, and the reckless actions of some members of our Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

The Soapbox: Autism is not a tragedy, fear is

What does it say about a society when someone with power and a microphone can stand before the nation and describe a population of people as an epidemic? Recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that autistic people will “never pay taxes,” “never write a poem,” and “never go on a date.” These claims were not made in the spirit of care or concern. They were made to evoke fear, to paint autism as a mistake, and to signal to the public that autistic lives are somehow incompatible with value, agency, or contribution. That framing is not just inaccurate. It is a step backward into a past many of us have fought hard to move beyond.

This show will spark something in you. You might feel awe, surrounded by Party’s feats of color and scale. You might feel moved, seeing the echoes of generations of artists, pushing the boundaries of their forms.

You might also be reminded of the murals in your own neighborhood. That’s the power of murals – to stand in a space transformed and know someone like you made this place beautiful.

Reductions in federal funding of Medicaid will force NH to have to make difficult choices. It could mean cuts to crucial Medicaid programs like the Katie Beckett option and most likely will increase restrictions on eligibility, increase service limitations, increase and normalize institutionalization, increase waitlist time for waiver services, and more.

The Trump Administration is targeting immigrant communities and significantly increasing the operations of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, including contributing to mass deportations. This is happening right here in New Hampshire.

Looking at world – and even national – events can cause anxiety, fear, and an overall negative attitude. I personally do not let things affect me to the point that I hate people or lash out. Of course, I sometimes participate in a health debate but my disagreement with someone else doesn’t lead to me hating them or harming them, or even assassinating their character.

What is it that New Hampshire Republicans want, at the end?

I know that not all New Hampshire Republicans want the same things. For some, it’s the pro-business, anti-tax piece of the platform that makes them register as Republicans. For others, it’s a desire for revenge against societal shifts that they don’t like or that make them uncomfortable — for which they use the shorthand “woke.” But in this moment, made unique by the appetite and actions of Donald Trump and his administration, it is impossible for a New Hampshire Republican to pick and choose the way the party does or does not represent their desires.

Opening Day is sacred

As a teacher, I am allotted three personal days each school year, and as soon as I return to my classroom in August, before I even unpack, I put in for a personal day that will coincide with the Red Sox first official game, usually sometime at the end of March.
