Some wanted the Sununu Youth Services Center  (SYSC) property to remain as it is, others wanted it to feature starter and smaller homes for seniors, still others complained River Road couldn’t take any more traffic and others wanted to know how the state could sell the property, given covenants on it.

The federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program has helped our city tackle this crisis head-on. Its funds have been used to develop 161 affordable housing units for low- and moderate-income families, while also allowing the city to serve over 20,000 Granite Staters. Federal programs like this one can go a long way in helping meet our community’s needs.    

Unfortunately, Republicans have very different plans for the program. The GOP-controlled Senate is gearing up to slash CDBG funding by $200 million. Trump has even gone a step further by proposing its complete elimination.

The future of the 144-bed Sununu Youth Services Center will take center stage on Oct. 16 when the public is invited to hear from city and state officials at Brady Sullivan Tower, 1750 Elm St., to discuss what many describe as a once-in-a-generation redevelopment opportunity for Manchester, the region, and the state.
