Are we willing to risk disenfranchisement of some voters for needing absentee ballots?

I write in STRONG opposition to NH Senate Bills 213, 218, and 287, and all their negative impacts on vulnerable groups of voters who cast absentee ballots – those living with disabilities who may have no way to leave their homes or would need expensive or complex planning, the elderly, those providing 24/7 care to a family member, and those with very limited financial means – as well as those of us who are consistent and lifelong voters.

The Soapbox: Why Medicaid premiums threaten more than just budgets

Imagine living on $1,304.17 a month. For many Granite Staters, this is not a hypothetical—it’s their reality. That’s the monthly income for an individual at the 2025 federal poverty level. Now consider that the median rent for a studio apartment in New Hampshire is $1,297. That leaves $7.17 for food, transportation, medical needs, heat, clothing, and other necessities. Seven dollars. For an entire month. No amount of creative household budgeting can cover all individual expenses at that rate.

Why I Left the Free State Cult

I wanted out. Fearing backlash, I slowly, passively removed myself from FSP circles. I stopped attending events and unfriended thousands on Facebook. In early 2016, when Ian Freeman publicly claimed that children can consent to sex, I opted for a formal cleaving.

I still think of Rachel every year around this time, as my Facebook feed fills with mortar-board hats, acceptance letters, and congratulatory yard signs, and I wonder how many of those gleeful graduates have their next several decades mapped out, and how many are secretly terrified by their lack of a map.  I was terrified at graduation, and for decades afterwards; but I can say now that loved the journey, and I love where it brought me.

State leaders are limiting the ability to meet the differing needs of Granite Staters. By inserting sections 451 and 452 into the State Budget (HB 2), they would ban all programs tailored to people based on their age, disability status, gender, or race, among other factors. This applies to state, municipal, and school programs.

How does one identify a ‘douchebag’? Glad you asked

I’m particularly fond of using the term “douchebag” when referring to someone deserving of contempt. I’ve been drawn to the word since I first watched the iconic SNL skit set in the Victorian-era with Lord and Lady Douchebag.

But what exactly is a douchebag? Where did the term originate? And, more importantly, how can we positively identify a douchebag?

I retired in 2015 with cautious hope that society was moving toward greater acceptance. But in recent years, that hope has dimmed. Across New Hampshire, some lawmakers and vocal community members have introduced and supported legislation that targets transgender youth and the adults who support them. These policies do not protect children—they harm them.

The NH Senate Finance Committee’s recent meetings are a great example of this. Among the many issues the Senate has been tackling regarding HB1 & 2, is a small, financially insignificant budget issue regarding the State Council on the Arts – where I work, until June 26th, 2025, according to this committee’s latest decisions.

For English teachers, the stack of essays that need to be graded at any given moment is notoriously referred to as “The Pile.” The Pile of student essays starts to grow early in the course and doesn’t relent until your final grades are submitted. The Pile is daunting. The Pile is a horrible, ubiquitous, nightmarish entity that always lurks in an English teacher’s periphery at all times.

Going Against the Gray: Bye, bye, so long, farewell

Well I didn’t do it during COVID, but 18 months ago I thought I’d embrace the “real” me and grow out my short curly dark hair after several decades of coloring it. Took no time at all to grow it out because it was short. I wore it gray for nearly a year. And then, much to the horror of anyone on those “love my gray hair” websites, I dyed it back to its normal-dyed dark brown color.
